Angelina Jolie has caught the directing bug and she’s not afraid to talk about it. Jolie recently spoke with Du Jour magazine about her experience directing her new film Unbroken, and what she hopes her future career focuses on.
“I’ve never been comfortable as an actor; I’ve never loved being in front of the camera,” said Jolie. “I didn’t ever think I could direct, but I hope I’m able to have a career at it because I’m much happier.” The magazine reports that when asked if she plans to give up acting entirely, Jolie smiled and said, “Absolutely.”
Still, Jolie did not clarify when this shift would occur. For now, she’s balancing her roles in movies like By the Sea, a film she wrote and is directing, producing and acting in opposite husband Brad Pitt, also a producer. Even their son Maddox is working on the project, as a production assistant.
“Compared to Unbroken, this film is a walk in the park,” Jolie said of By the Sea. “The tricky thing is directing myself and directing Brad. It’s hard, dramatic material, and we’re balancing.”
Jolie also talked about how passionate she was about making Unbroken a reality, even though it had been a project that had been in limbo for a while when she found it. “I saw these four sentences on Unbroken,” she said, describing when Universal gave her a list of projects to look through, “I went home and I said to Brad, ‘I’m really curious about this film — it’s a triumph of the human spirit finding faith and forgiveness, and this man’s life seems so interesting.’ And Brad said, ‘Oh, honey, that project has been around forever.’ ”
Unbroken is set to hit theaters on Dec. 25.
