Anne Hathaway is defending Jennifer Lawrence against critics who are shaming the Joy actress for calling out a journalist in Sunday evening’s Golden Globes press room.
On Friday morning, Hathaway wrote a note on Facebook, imploring critics to stop speaking negatively about Lawrence’s “scolding” that was “taken out of context.”
“Dear the Internet, It’s become pretty clear that the Jennifer Lawrence ‘scolding’ was taken out of context and that she was dryly joking with a journalist who was indeed using his phone to take photos of her,” Hathaway began her Facebook post. “Let’s not continue the sad but common practice of building people – especially women- up just to viciously tear them down when we perceive them to have misstepped. Jennifer is a beautiful, talented, wildly successful, popular, FOUR TIME OSCAR NOMINATED young woman.”

Following Lawrence’s best actress win at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, she proceeded to the press room, where she called out a reporter for not looking up from his phone while asking her questions. Lawrence interrupted the reporter twice, first responding while waving her finger, “You can’t live your whole life behind your phone, bro” and replied a second time with, “We’re at the Golden Globes. If you put your phone down, you’d know that.”
Hathaway asked fans to “please let us not punish her for these things” before signing off the post with a “Sincerely, A J-Law fan” fan and the hashtags “#supportstrongwomen?” ?”#imwithher?” and ?”#whycantwegiveloveonemorechance?.”
