Jason Momoa playing Aquaman may be one of the more highly anticipated aspects of the Justice League debut next week, but Justin Hartley swimming with the fishes is pretty entertaining — and cringeworthy.
The This Is Us actor starred as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the unsold 2006 pilot Aquaman, which was developed by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar for the now-defunct WB network.
The action was Sharknado big and so are the eye rolls the dialogue elicits.
The Aquaman character did appear on Smallville in the October 2005 episode “Aqua,” in which Alan Ritchson played the DC hero.
Hartley landed (no pun intended) the role for the single episode stand-alone, which was ultimately passed on by The CW.
Along with Hartley, the Aquaman pilot starred Lou Diamond Phillips, Denise Quinones and Ving Rhames.
This iteration of Curry lost his mother when he was a child, and now he’s a beach bum who runs a dive shop. Hartley’s Curry knows he is special, but only uses his powers for fun, until, of course, he must get it together and save the day.
There is no need to watch the entire pilot — though if you’re curious, it’s on iTunes for $1.99 — because the trailer is so satisfying in that cult-classic awful CG and hokey lines sort of way.
