The editors of Argo and Silver Linings Playbook were recognized for best edited feature film, dramatic and comedy/musical, respectively, at the American Cinema Editors’ 63rd annual ACE Eddie Awards, Saturday at the Beverly Hilton.
William Goldenberg edited Argo, and Silver Linings was cut by Jay Cassidy and Crispin Struthers.
This makes ACE the latest organization to honor Ben Affleck’s Iran hostage drama Argo, which has already been recognized by those including the DGA, PGA, SAG and the BAFTAs, where Goldenberg also was selected for his editing.

Accepting the ACE award, Goldenberg thanked the Argo team and called Affleck “my partner in the editing room.”
Goldenberg actually was a double nominee at the Eddies, having co-edited nominee Zero Dark Thirty with Dylan Tichenor.
In eight of the past 10 ACE Awards, the winner of the best edited dramatic feature category has gone on to win the Oscar in editing. Once in the last decade it went to the winner of the comedy or musical category (Chicago).
At six of the past 10 Eddie Awards shows, the film that won either the dramatic or comedy/musical ACE categories went on to win the Academy Award for best picture.
No film has won best picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a best editing nomination from ACE since Ordinary People in 1981.

This year, six of the nine nominated films for best picture have editors that were nominated for ACE Awards. That includes Argo and Silver Linings, as well as Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty.
Also at the Eddie Awards, Nicholas C. Smith and Robert Grahamjones, editors of Disney/Pixar’s Oscar-nominated Brave, won trophies for best edited animated feature. Editor Malik Bendjelloul won the documentary feature category for his work on Oscar-nominated Searching for Sugar Man.
Steven Spielberg was honored during the event with the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award. He warmly saluted the editors — his “heroes” — saying “there is no greater partner to have than all of you.” Spielberg got a laugh when he commented that they have given so much to so many directors, some of whom might “make you wonder why you are not the director.”
He also gave heartfelt praise to Michael Kahn, his editor and collaborator of 37 years.
Editors Richard Marks (Terms of Endearment) and Larry Silk (One Survivor Remembers) received lifetime career achievement awards.
Presenting the award to Marks, filmmaker Alexander Payne emphasized the importance of teachers and mentors. He related that he was beginning to teach at UCLA, where earlier he had be taught by Marks. Payne said he hoped “to give to others some version of what [Marks] has given to me, and Dede Allen to him, and so on back for generations.”
Among the winners in the television categories was Walter Murch, whose work on Hemingway & Gelhorn won in the category of edited miniseries or motion picture for television.
