Arnold Schwarzenegger is telling all.
In his new memoir, Total Recall, the actor reveals more details surrounding his secret son and his infidelity that led to a divorce from wife Maria Shriver.
In an excerpt published by The New York Daily News, Schwarzenegger writes that Shriver secretly booked a couples’ counseling session the day after he left office as the Governor of California. During that session, on Jan. 4, 2011, Shriver allegedly blindsided her husband by confronting him about the child he had secretly fathered with housekeeper Mildred Baena.
“The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, ‘Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child — whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred,” the actor writes. “I told the therapist, ‘It’s true.'”
Schwarzengger admits to groveling for his wife’s forgiveness, telling her that he had “screwed up,” that she was the “perfect wife” and that he was still “turned on” by her, but to no avail. Shriver separated from him and later filed for divorce.
Schwarzenegger also writes that he fathered the child, Joseph, in 1996 during a tryst with Baena in the family’s guest house while Shriver and their children were away on vacation. Schwarzengger was still in town filming Batman and Robin at the time.
The 65-year-old says he tried to convince himself that Baena’s husband was the father of the boy in question, but ultimately Joseph’s resemblance to the actor became too strong to deny. “I realized there was little doubt that he was my son,” Schwarzengger writes.
The actor kept his affair a secret for many years, partly due to embarrassment, but also because he did not want to face Shriver’s family, the Kennedys. “Instead of doing the right thing, I’d just put the truth away in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn’t deal with it every day,” he admits.
In the book, Schwarzenegger attributes stupidity and arrogance to his reason’s for cheating, but says that he does hope to someday reunite with his ex-wife. “You can call this denial,” he says, “but it’s the way my mind works.”
During the funeral for her father, Shriver may have taken a shot at her ex-husband while giving a eulogy. She recalled the admiration and respect with which her father looked at her mother, saying, “When I think about it today, it actually takes my breath away.” Shriver also credits her father with teaching her brothers how to properly treat their wives.
Schwarzenegger, who was in the audience at the time, says the shot may have been “partly directed at me.”
Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story is due out Oct. 1.
