Nineteen companies and organizations including ARRI, Disney and Dolby were recognized for “advancing entertainment through technology” at the International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society’s fifth annual Entertainment Technology and New Product Awards on Wednesday during a luncheon at Paramount Pictures.
Among the recipients of the Society’s Lumiere Awards were projector maker Barco, which received the honor for its laser projector, aimed at improving the brightness for digital cinema; and Dolby, for its Dolby Vision system aimed at displaying images at an extended dynamic range.
Camera maker ARRI, Walt Disney Studios Technologies and research firm Fraunhofer Institute were honored for the development of a “trifocal” camera system that enables a “hybrid” 3D production by combining aspects of native 3D photography with conversion techniques.
U.K.-based Vision3 was honored for its post conversion management system that effectively tracks version, reviews and handling conforming. Aimed at allowing filmmakers to focus on the creative rather than the technology, it has already been used for Edge of Tomorrow and upcoming Jupiter Ascending.
The 4DX 4D theater system that was recently installed at Regal Cinemas LA Live Stadium 14 was also feted during the ceremony.
A 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to stereoscopic imaging pro John Rupkalvis.
