Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Sirius Black Talking – H 2012
Warner Bros. The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for its 16th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards, to be handed out Feb. 4 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Throwing out a wide net to include a number of films that haven’t appeared in many previous awards line-ups, the Art Directors Guild has nominated movies as different as the British spy drama Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the last Harry Potter installment Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and the post-9/11 drama Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close for its 16th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards.
The nominations, announced by ADG council president Thomas A. Walsh and awards co-producers Tom Wilkins and Greg Grande, cover three film categories, five TV categories and commercials and music videos. The winners of the 16th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards will be announced at a black-tie dinner Feb. 4 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Tinker was nominated for best production design in a period film, along with awards season regulars The Artist, Hugo, and The Help and the previously overlooked Shakespearean thriller Anonymous.
Potter earned its nomination in the fantasy film category, where it will compete with Captain America: The First Avenger; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; Cowboys & Aliens and, in a move that recognizes the design work that can go into a computer animated movie, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
The third movie category, contemporary film, ranges from Extremely Loud to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Descendants, Drive and Bridesmaids.
Turning to television, the ADG’s category for one-hour single camera television series encompasses Boardwalk Empire long with freshman series Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, The Playboy Club and Pan Am.
The competition for TV movie or miniseries consists of Mildred Pierce, Cinema Verite, Too Big to Fail, The Hour and Bling Ring.
And the nominees for half-hour, single-camera TV series are the sitcoms Modern Family, 30 Rock, Weeds, Californication and New Girl. Richard Berg, nominated for the “Express Christmas” episode of Family, took home the award in the same category last year for another episode of the same show.
At the ADG’s awards gala, which Paula Poundstone is scheduled to host, production designer Tony Walton will received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Production designers Robert Boyle, William Darling and Alfred Junge will be inducted into the ADG’s Hall of Fame. And the guild’s Cinematic Imagery Award will be presented to the filmmaking team behind the Harry Potter films.
