Scenic artist John Moffitt, Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated set designer James J. Murakami and senior illustrator Martin Kline will join production designer Norm Newberry as recipients of the Art Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be handed out Jan. 27 at the 22nd annual ADG Excellence in Production Design Awards at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland.
Also a fine artist and muralist, Moffitt’s credits include Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Ghostbusters, Iron Man, the Batman franchise and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He also was the ADG’s associate executive director from 2006-2014, when he retired to devote himself to painting full-time.
Murakami’s work has included nine films for Clint Eastwood, among them Gran Torino, Invictus, J. Edgar, American Sniper and Sully. He received an Emmy for HBO’s Deadwood and was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on The Changeling.
Klin has been doing visual effects, concept illustration, character design and storyboards since 1977, compiling a list of credits including Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Spider-Man, Polar Express and Beowulf. He career included 12 years as managing art director at Sony Pictures Imageworks.
As previously revealed, Newberry is the final recipient. He is an art director, production designer and set designer with credits including Polar Express, Beowulf and Avatar.
Also previously announced, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy will be honored with the ADG Cinematic Imagery Award during the ceremony, while Sir Ken Adam, Oscar-winning production designer behind the James Bond franchise, and Tyrus Wong, award-winning Illustrator of Bambi fame, will be inducted into ADG’s Hall of Fame.
