Ashton Kutcher is engaged in Twitter war with New York’s Village Voice over child prostitution and sex trafficking.
The war of the words with the paper started Wednesday when the publication took the new Two and a Half Men star to task over statistics put forward during interviews and in the “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls” public service announcements that he and wife Demi Moore spearheaded for their Demi and Ashton Foundation, which strives to raise awareness and eliminate child sex slavery across the world.
In an article titled “Real Men Get Their Facts Straight”, the paper said the actor’s claim that 100,000 to 300,000 children in America are turned into prostitutes each year was incorrect. It claims that after two months of researching law enforcement data, Village Voice Media found that there were only 8,263 arrests for child prostitution during the most recent decade.
Kutcher responded via his Twitter account and attacked the paper’s racy classified section, “Hey @villagevoice, speaking of data, maybe you can help me.. How much $ did your ‘escorts’ in your classified on backpage make last year?” Also, “Hey @villagevoice speaking of Data…How many of your girls selling themselves in your classifieds are you doing age verification on?”
Another zinger, “hey @villagevoice, hows the lawsuit from the 15 year old victim who alleges you helped enslave them going?” The actor also warned, “Hey @villagevoice I’m just getting started!!!!!!!! BTW I only PLAYED stupid on TV.”
As for the numbers he’s been touting for the cause, Kutcher wrote, “Hey @villagevoice if you want to dispute the online data I’ve collected about the consumption of child porn or the hard facts from [National Center for Missing and Exploited Children] lmk.”
He later wrote, “Hey @villagevoice REAL MEN DON’T BUY GIRLS and REAL NEWS PUBLICATIONS DON’T SELL THEM.”
The Village Voice responded via Twitter, “@aplusk Don’t spout phony statistics which are then used to justify millions in spending for ‘awareness.’ Victims need beds and counseling.”
Demi Moore hosted a CNN documentary on child trafficking in Nepal this past Sunday and Kutcher’s Twitter feed continues to assail corporations and businesses for ties to sex trafficking.
He wrote Thursday, “fact: In the US, children as young as FIVE YEARS OLD have been sold for sex” and “fact: Since Jan, 1.9 million people have searched for terms on the NCMEC watch list, ‘kiddy sex,’ ‘child rape,’ ‘little girls nude.'”
