Wellinton Alves/Marvel EntertainmentAs Marvel Studios is fond of telling fans, “It’s all connected”— but to see exactly how the first Avengers movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron are connected, Marvel’s new Avengers: Age of Ultron Prelude is where to turn.
Released digitally Tuesday, the “Infinite Comic” — Marvel’s term for its digital-first releases, which have scene transitions created specifically for the digital format — reveals what happened to Loki’s scepter after the battle of New York in Joss Whedon‘s first Avengers movie, and the role it plays in the activation of the powers of both Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.
The story, by Will Corona Pilgrim and Wellinton Alves, also features scenes from last year’s second Captain America movie, including the post-credit sequence that introduced the two new heroes, as well as Hydra villain Baron Von Strucker.
Furthermore, the “activation” of powers in Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch suggests — but, importantly, doesn’t confirm — a connection between the two characters and an ongoing plot line in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD TV series, which has recently introduced the concept of “activating”a certain subsection of humanity using certain objects. Is this more evidence that the new heroes will be revealed to be Inhumans at some point in Age of Ultron? It certainly seems that way …
Avengers: Age of Ultron Prelude — This Scepter’d Isle is available now. Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released on May 1.
