The Avengers is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2012.
Everything about it is big: Big stars including Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo; Big superheroes including Black Widow, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Hulk; and, to make such a film, a big budget.
So it came as a surprise to hear that some shots may have been taken with the tiniest of cameras, the iPhone.

Seamus McGarvey, director of photography for the Joss Whedon-helmed superhero film, supposedly said in an interview with the Irish Film & Television Network that some of the shots had been taken with his iPhone. And fans have seen at least one of these shots because it’s in the trailer (watch it again at the end of this post).

“The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand,” said McGarvey. “On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer.”
“I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will affect the look of the film,” said McGarvey.
The interview with McGarvey is mainly focused on the film, We Need to Talk About Kevin, which he also worked on. After it was published and other publications started spreading the news about his comments, McGarvey told THR that he did not mean he used the iPhone, but rather a Canon camera on the film.
“I was talking about how up and coming film makers have access to a whole range of new technologies which expand our options as filmmakers. I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5d Mk2 were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvel’s The Avengers movie,” he stated to THR. “Unfortunately, this was edited to read that I shot some of the film with the iPhone. This is not true.”
Disney has confirmed that nothing in the film was shot on an iPhone.
The Irish Film & Television Network could not immediately be reached for comment.
Marvel’s The Avengers, which will be released by Disney in May 2012, broke iTunes records when the trailer was downloaded more than 10 million times in the first 24 hours.
