‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Two-Parter to Be Retitled, Say Directors

Following Captain America: Civil War, Marvel’s Avengers are going to get to experience an unexpected life after wartime, with directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealing that the 2018/2019 two-part Avengers: Infinity War project will be retitled before release.

In an interview with Uproxx to promote the new Captain America movie, the Russo brothers explained that the current titles for each feature — Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Avengers: Infinity War Part II — don’t accurately reflect the two movies in terms of structure and scope.

“The two movies are two very different movies,” Joe Russo said, with Anthony Russo adding that the shared subtitle is “misleading.”

“The intention is we will change it, we just haven’t come up with the [final] titles yet. But, yes, we will change it,” Joe Russo promised. “That is a scoop: we will retitle them.”

The original title for the two-part movie came from a 1992 comic book series in which the heroes of the Marvel Universe fought against evil doppelgangers created by a cosmic entity called the Magus, who wanted control of the Infinity Gauntlet, an object that granted godlike power to anyone who possessed it. The Gauntlet was powered by the Infinity Gems, which — renamed the “Infinity Stones” — have appeared in a number of Marvel Studios projects to date, including 2012’s Avengers and 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

The third and fourth Avengers movies were announced as the two-part Infinity War during a presentation in October 2014, which also announced dates for Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Inhumans, all of which have shifted on the calendar in the months since, with Inhumans being taken off the calendar altogether last month.
