Eiza Gonzalez, one of the stars of From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series, has joined Steve Carell in Universal’s untitled Robert Zemeckis project.
Leslie Mann and Janelle Monae are already cast in the project.
The untitled feature is based on Jeff Malmberg’s 2010 doc Marwencol, which followed a man who builds a miniature WWII-era village with action figures and dolls as a way to recover from a violent assault. The studio is describing the project as “one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit.”
Zemeckis co-wrote the screenplay with Caroline Thompson.
Carell is the broken man who builds the miniature set, with Gonzalez set to play one of the women in the fantasy, a singer named Caralala who works in the village’s bar.
(Monae is also a woman in the village, named GI Julie. Mann’s character details are unknown.)
Zemeckis is producing via his Universal-based ImageMovers, along with Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey, as well as Cherylanne Martin. The movie is eyeing a fall start.
Maradith Frenkel and Chloe Yellin are overseeing the project on behalf of the studio.
Gonzalez is one of the bad guys in Edgar Wright’s much-buzzed-about summer crime thriller Baby Driver. She plays a character named Darling. Gonzalez also recently wrapped shooting Robert Rodriguez’s Alita Battle Angel.
She is repped by CAA and Management 360.
