Bob Gale has seen Avengers: Endgame and is proud that his 1985 film Back to the Future played a role in the plot.
In the latest Marvel installment, time travel is a big part of how the superheroes intend on undoing Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) snap, and while discussing how that process might work, Back to the Future is mentioned multiple times.
“I was delighted to learn from Endgame that all of the Marvel superheroes are fans of Back to the Future,” Gale told The Hollywood Reporter. “I knew our movie had been seen in almost every part of our world, but I had no idea we’d been playing in other parts of the multi-verse, too.”
Gale wrote the 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd and directed by Robert Zemeckis. It was a big hit. And so is Endgame, which has surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic as the No. 2 movie of all time.
Gale had some fun with the news that Endgame was doing so well at the box office.
“Now I need to find out if we’re owed some money from those multi-verse theatrical runs, and if not, why my contract didn’t cover those territories!” he joked.
Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have said Back to the Future is one of their favorite films, but to make Endgame unique, the duo felt the need to differentiate the rules of time travel.
