Matt Reeves is addressing the increasingly loud discussion over whether or not his upcoming Batman movie will be part of the larger DC Extended Universe of Justice League and Wonder Woman.
“Just to be clear: Of COURSE Batman will be part of the D.C. Universe,” the director tweeted Thursday morning. “Batman will be BATMAN…”
He went on to say, “In my comments from a while back about not being part of the DCEU, I was talking about The Batman being a story specifically about Batman… not about the others in the Universe. That it wouldn’t be filled with cameos servicing other stories — that it would be a BATMAN story.”
Whether or not Reeves’ The Batman would be part of the same universe as Justice League became the subject of online discussion this week when a July interview the director gave re-emerged in the wake of the news that Warner Bros was developing a label for DC properties to be adapted into movies outside the shared universe of earlier features, beginning with a Joker movie from The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips.
In the July interview, he spoke about pitching the movie to Warner Bros.
“What they said was, ‘Look, it’s a standalone, it’s not part of the extended universe,’ ” Reeves said at the time.
The solo Batman movie has long been a surprisingly touchy subject. Initially it was to be written and directed by current big-screen Batman Ben Affleck. Reeves took on the project in February after Affleck withdrew from the director’s role. The War of the Planet of the Apes helmer is reportedly planning a trilogy of Batman movies, a fact that led to speculation about whether or not Ben Affleck will stick with the role long term. Although the actor has said that he has no plans to leave, brother Casey has since publicly stated that Affleck would not be appearing in Reeves’ movie.
Batman’s next big-screen appearance is in this November’s Justice League, with Affleck under the cowl.
