Clay Enos, Warner Bros. PicturesThe future of DC Entertainment’s Man of Steel looks a little stormy, with Warner Bros. releasing its first official image from 2016’s Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, showing Superman standing on a rooftop moodily staring at the viewer in the rain.
The image was released to accompany an interview director Zack Snyder gave to USA Today about the movie, in which he spoke about working to evolve the character of Superman following 2013’s Man of Steel, saying that he and actor Henry Cavill “both created this guy and we can push him around a little bit.” (That line about having created the character perhaps coming as a surprise to anyone who remembers Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel.)

Snyder said that, originally, he has been “in no rush to put Batman in the movie, but on the other hand it seemed organic the way our story was unfolding to start to feather him in.” The selection of Ben Affleck—10 years older than Cavill—as the new Dark Knight, he said, came in part because “it’s cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys.”
The director also addressed the unusual title for the movie, saying that while he wouldn’t discuss the relationship between Batman and Superman in the film, “suffice to say there is a ‘v’ in between their names [instead of the more traditional “vs.”] to keep it from being a straight ‘versus’ movie, even in the most subtle way.”
Despite the many superhero movies in production and development, Snyder remains bullish about the future success of his current project. “You can talk all you want about other superhero movies,” he told the newspaper, “but it’s Batman and Superman, let’s just be honest. I don’t know how you get bigger than that.”
Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice will be released in May 2016.
