LONDON — Ben Affleck‘s Iranian-set hostage crisis film Argo will mark its Middle Eastern and North African premiere at a gala screening during the upcoming Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF).
The annual cultural event organised by Doha Film Institute (DFI), which runs Nov. 17 through 24, will host the film based on events from recently declassified CIA files, which reveals the behind-the-scenes drama of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.
Affleck’s third film as director has earned more than $60 million internationally and is heading towards $100 million at the U.S. box office.
Organizers of the fourth edition of the event also revealed a slew of industry events for the festival including an “In Conversation with Robert De Niro,” to discuss his career. The actor will be on hand for the screening of David O. Russell’s Silver Lining Playbook.
Filmmaker Mira Nair, whose The Reluctant Fundamentalist opens the event and whose film received funding from the DFI, will also discuss the making of her film that shot in five cities across three continents.
The public panels at this year’s “Doha Talks” will debate the key issues in the regional and international cinematic landscape.
Other Doha Talks include “Transmedia: Storytelling in the Digital Age,” which explores the boundaries of film in correlation to gaming, modern technology, and the future of storytelling and “Khaleeji Films: Overcoming Stereotypes,” discussing the regional and international influences on current Khaleeji filmmaking.
Panelists signed up include actress Hend Sabri, writer Jeremy Brock, Oscar winning editor and producer Lisa Fruchtman and filmmakers Hayfa Al Mansour, Shimit Amin, Michael Singh, Rambod Javan and Ashutosh Gowariker, amongst others.
