Benedict Cumberbatch, Helena Bonham Carter, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Keira Knightley are among more than 250 personalities from the British entertainment and arts world who have signed a letter urging Brits to vote to remain in the European Union next month.
In an open letter published in the Guardian, they warn that in the case of a British exit from the EU, a so-called Brexit, the country would become “an outsider shouting from the wings.”
Filmmakers Danny Boyle and Sam Taylor-Johnson, music star Paloma Faith, designer Vivienne Westwood and author John Le Carre are among the other signatories of the letter, coordinated by “Stronger,” the official pro-EU campaign that prime minister David Cameron is also supporting.
“Britain is not just stronger in Europe, it is more imaginative and more creative,” the letter also says. “Our global creative success would be severely weakened by walking away.”
It further argues: “From the Bard [William Shakespeare] to Bowie, British creativity inspires and influences the rest of the world. We believe that being part of the EU bolsters Britain’s leading role on the world stage.”
The referendum deciding whether the U.K. remains in the EU takes place on June 23. Cameron’s ruling Conservative Party is split on the issue, with former London mayor Boris Johnson being a vocal supporter of a Brexit.
