BERLIN– Tom Hooper’s multi-Oscar nominated Les Miserables will have a special gala screening at the Berlin International Film Festival next month, one of several high-profile titles added to the festival’s official line-up today.
Hooper’s big-screen adaption of the hit musical is up for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor for star Hugh Jackman and Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway.

Joining Hooper in Berlin are fellow Brit filmmakers Michael Winterbottom and Ken Loach, whose new films will also receive special non-competition slots at the German festival. Winterbottom’s The Look of Love, a comedy biopic starring Steve Coogan as London porn baron turned property tycoon Paul Raymond, will have European Premiere in Berlin. Imogen Poots, Stephen Fry and Anna Friel also star.
Loach’s The Spirit of ’45, a documentary about the founding of the welfare state in post-WWII Britain, will celebrate its world premiere in Berlin.
Other high-profile titles getting a plum Berlin Special screening slot include The Best Offer, the story of an eccentric art auctioneer from Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Torantore (Cinema Paradiso) starring Geoffrey Rush; Tokyo Family from veteran Japanese helmer Yoji Yamada (The Twilight Samurai) and Top of the Lake, the seven-part TV series directed by Oscar-winner Jane Campion (The Piano) and starring Holly Hunter, Peter Mullan and Cohen Holloway.

In addition to Loach’s Spirit of ’45, several documentaries, including Raoul Peck’s Fatal Assistance – a look at the charity hype that followed the devastating earthquakes in Haiti and two German docs about the Paralympics: Michael Hammon’s Gold – You Can Do More Than You Think and Nico von Glasow’s My Way to Olympia will have their world premieres as special Berlinale screenings.
The 63rd Berlin International Film Festival runs Feb.7-17.
