International buyers dove into Wash Me in the River.
The upcoming action-thriller, starring Robert De Niro, John Malkovich, and Jack Huston from Midnight in the Switchgrass director Randall Emmett, was snatched up by European and Asian buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market.
Highland Film Group, which is handling sales on the title, closed deals with the likes of StudioCanal in France, Germany’s Capelight, Signature in the U.K., PictureWorks in India, Madman for Australia/New Zealand, and Japan’s Happinet for the film, which recently wrapped principal photography in Puerto Rico.
Highland’s distribution arm The Avenue plans to do a theatrical release for Wash Me in the River in North America in Spring 2022 and is partnering with Paramount Home Entertainment for the movie’s home entertainment and digital roll-out stateside.
Emmett directed Wash Me in the River from a screenplay by Adam Taylor Barker and Chris Sivertson. The film tells the story of a recovering opioid addict who, with two cops hot on his trail, is seeking revenge on the dealers responsible for selling the drugs that resulted in his fiancé’s death. The film’s cast also includes Little Woman star Willa Fitzgerald and rapper Quavo in his debut role.
This will be Emmett’s second feature as a director, following the (still-unreleased) Midnight in the Switchgrass starring Bruce Willis, Megan Fox, and Emile Hirsch. Emmett is best known as a producer, of such films as Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman (2019) and the Baltasar Kormákur-directed Everest (2015).
Other territories sold by Highland for Wash Me in the River at Berlin’s EFM last week include Spain (Inopia), Middle East (Eagle Films), Eastern Europe and Russia (Daro), Benelux (Premiere TV), Italy (Italian International Film), Taiwan (MovieCloud), South Africa (FilmFinity), Greece (Spentzos Films), and Portugal (Lusomundo).
Wash Me in the River is produced by Emmett/Furla’s Emmett, George Furla, Tim Sullivan, and Chad Verdi.
The 2021 European Film Market, held in an online-only version this year, wrapped up on Friday.
