Boyhood Still - H 2014
The Berlin International Film Festival has bulked up its competition, adding Richard Linklater‘s Boyhood, starring Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, to its official lineup in the film’s international premiere.
Two Men in Town, the drama from director Rachid Bouchareb (London River) featuring Forest Whitaker and Harvey Keitel will have its world premiere in competition.

Other world premieres in Berlin’s competition lineup include three Chinese dramas: Black Coal, Thin Ice from director Yinan Diao (Night Train, Uniform); Norwegian feature In Order of Disappearance starring Stellan Skarsgard and Bruno Ganz and directed by Hans Petter Moland (A Somewhat Gentle Man); and Argentine title History of Fear from first-timer Benjamin Naishtat.
Two more Chinese features will compete for Berlin’s coveted Gold and Silver Bears this year: Blind Massage from Ye Lou (Suzhou River) and No Man’s Land from Hao Ning (Mongolian Ping Pong).
Beauty and the Beast, the hotly anticipated retelling of the classic French fairytale by Brotherhood of the Wolf director Christophe Gans, which shot in Berlin last year and features Gallic stars Vincent Cassel and Lea Seydoux, will screen out of competition in its international premiere.

Other competition titles include The Little House from veteran Japanese filmmaker Yoji Yamada (Twilight Samurai); The Third Side of the River from Argentina’s Celina Murga; Macondo, the first feature from Austrian documentary film maker Sudabeh Mortezai; and Praia do Futuro from Brazil’s Karim Ainouz (Madame Sata).
Three German titles have been added to Berlin’s competition lineup: Inbetween Worlds from director Feo Aladag (When We Leave) featuring rising star Ronald Zehrfeld; Edward Berger‘s Jack; and Stations of the Cross from director Dietrich Bruggemann. They join the previously announced The Beloved Sisters from director Dominik Graf. It’s been years since four German films have competed for the Golden Bear in Berlin.
Wes Anderson‘s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which opens this year’s festival, is one of the hot competition titles this year. Other contenders include Aloft, the English-language debut from Claudia Llosa, who won the Berlin Golden Bear in 2009 with The Milk of Sorrow; Alain Resnais‘ Life of Riley; ’71 from British director Yann Demange; the Greek drama Stratos from director Yannis Economides and Graf’s The Beloved Sisters.
George Clooney‘s historic drama The Monuments Men will have its world premiere out of competition in Berlin. Other hot titles in Berlin’s official lineup out of competition include Pascal Chaumeil‘s A Long Way Down, starring Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots, which will have its world premiere in Berlin; the Australian omnibus feature The Turning, featuring Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Miranda Otto, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham; and the documentaries We Come as Friends and The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden from Balletts Russes directors Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller.
The director’s cut of the first half of Lars von Trier‘s hotly anticipated two-film sex epic Nymphomaniac will also have its world premiere in Berlin.
The 64th Berlin International Film Festival runs Feb. 6-16.
