Indie distributor A71 Entertainment has picked up the Canadian rights to Director X’s Across the Line and two other Canadian indie films in Berlin.
A71 acquired the feature directorial debut of Director X, a music video director for such artists as Jay Z, Kanye West and R. Kelly. His most recent credits include the video for Drake’s chart-topper Hotline Bling and arts school TV drama Backstage.
The Berlinale deal for the Stephan James and Sarah Jeffrey-starring drama about a hockey player tipped for pro hockey, but struggling in a racially-charged high school, was done with The Little Film Company. Floyd Kane wrote the script for Across the Line, with Oscar-winner Michael Donovan (Bowling for Columbine), Amos Adetuyi and Mark Gosine producing. An April 8, 2016 theatrical release is planned.
A71 also picked up Jason Good’s Numb, a survivalist thriller to get a March 5, 2016 theatrical release, stars Battlestar Galactica star Jamie Bamber, Marie Avgeropoulos and Aleks Paunovic. The film, with a script by Andre Harden, follows two couples who find a coin and GPS coordinates to what appears as stolen gold when they search the pockets of an old man they encounter.
And A71 acquired The Rainbow Kid, the debut feature from writer-director Kire Paputts, about a young man with Down Syndrome traveling in rural Ontario. The indie will hit Canadian theaters on May 8, 2016.
