Berlin’s European Film Market will kick off 2015 with a series of new initiatives aimed at expanding its reach and keeping the EFM relevant in the rapidly changing film industry.
For the first time the EFM, which runs Feb. 5-13, concurrent with the Berlin International Film Festival, will include a special two-day session focused on high-end television drama, called Drama Series Days, which will include premiere screenings of small-screen productions.

The EFM this year is also launching its “Bridging the Dragon” initiative, a networking platform aimed at bringing together European and Chinese producers. Another new addition this year is EFM Startups, which will focus on innovative digital companies in the Berlin area, often termed Germany’s Silicon Valley.

The Hollywood Reporter is hosting a panel, together with the EFM and state subsidy board Filmstifftung NRW, on opportunities and developments in the German series landscape on Monday, Feb. 9.
“With our program, we want to expand the EFM into new business fields, develop the synergies between the festival and the EFM, and sustain the EFM’s position as one of the most important film markets worldwide,” said new EFM director Matthijs Wouter Knol.
The EFM Startups initiative will bring together the international film and media industry visiting the Berlin market with 10 successful Berlin-based digital entrepreneurs. The new program was developed together with state media body the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg as well as the Startup Germany association.
The EFM this year will also expand its successful Meet the Docs initiative, bringing together producers and financiers of non-fiction works, and will again hold the American Independents in Berlin series, organized the by Independent Filmmaker Project and the Sundance Institute, which acts as a focal point for U.S. indie filmmakers attending Berlin.
