COLOGNE, Germany — Features from Argentina to Korea, Britain to Japan will be served up at the 5th annual Culinary Cinema, the Berlin Film Festival’s food-flavored sidebar.
The movie-and-a-dinner program, which runs Feb. 13-18 during the festival mixes 12 films about food with an accompanying meal prepared by a star chef.
This year’s cinematic menu includes Iciar Bollain‘s Even the Rain starring Gael Garcia Bernal; Toast from Brit director SJ Clarkson featuring Helena Bonham Carter and Anna Lee‘s The Recipe, about a TV journalist searching for the secret to mouthwatering soybean soup, which will open the Culinary Cinema program.
Several food-based documentaries fill out the meal, including David Gelb‘s Jiro Dreams of Sushi about an 85-year-old sushi master in Tokyo and The Ways of Wine by Argentine director Nicolas Carreras, which follows a famed sommelier who has lost his sense of taste and smell.
Besides the feed, Berlin has used Culinary Cinema to promote a political message of healthy, environmentally sustainable agriculture. It’s a message that this year could not be more timely. Germany is in the midst of a food-poisoning scandal sparked after toxic levels of dioxin were found in eggs and meat from factory farms across the country.
