The Big Sick will screen as the opening night gala of the 2017 Seattle International Film Festival.
The Amazon feature comes from husband-wife writing team Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon, director Michael Showalter and producer Judd Apatow.
The comedy is based on the real-life romance of Gordon and Nanjiani, who, while navigating their clashing cultures, endured a life-changing twist when Emily contracted a mysterious illness. Zoe Kazan portrays Emily in the film, which also features Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, Anupam Kher, Bo Burnham and Aidy Bryant.
SIFF’s opening gala and screening will take place at the Marion Oliver McCaw Hall at Seattle Center on May 18. The fest’s complete lineup will be announced on May 3.
The Big Sick is set for a limited theatrical release on June 23 before it expands on July 14.
