David Cross’ directorial debut Hits will be distributed by BitTorrent Bundle in the program’s first feature film deal.
The comedy, which premiered at Sundance in January 2014, will be released on Feb. 13, 2015, as a pay-what-you-want BitTorrent Bundle. Fans will also be able set their own pricing in theaters at pay-what-you-want screenings in theatrical markets throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Cross, best known for his HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show and his role on Arrested Development, wrote and directed Hits, a dark comedy about fame and delusion in The United States of YouTube. Amy Sedaris, Michael Cera, Meredith Hagner, Matt Walsh and Jason Ritter star.
When Hits premiered at Sundance, THR‘s critic described it as “a frequently funny but easy-prey satire about America’s obsession with fame.”
BitTorrent’s Bundle program has been used by musicians and other artists to sell albums and other work at a price determined by the artist. Thom Yorke used it to distribute his new solo record, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes — the first paid record release via torrent.
