Black Panther has another accolade to celebrate after winning over critics and audiences earlier this year.
The Marvel movie earned three Golden Globes nominations on Thursday morning, for best original score by Ludwig Goransson; best original song by Kendrick Lamar, Anthony Tiffith, Mark Spears, Solana Rowe, Al Shuckburgh; and most notably, best motion picture — drama.
Marvel Studios’ Black Panther earned $1.3 billion worldwide and was hailed as an important cultural moment. Now it is also one of the rare superhero movies to have earned a Golden Globes nomination. It will go up against BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born in the category at the 2019 awards show.
Two years ago, Deadpool became the first live-action superhero film to be nominated in either of the best motion picture categories with its musical or comedy nomination, while Pixar’s animated The Incredibles was nominated in the best motion picture — musical or comedy in 2004. Neither film took home the statue. Marvel and Disney have been mounting an awards campaign for Black Panther with sights set on it also earning a best picture nomination at the Oscars.
Ryan Coogler directed Black Panther and is signed on for a sequel, which Marvel has not yet dated. The first film starred Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, the king of Wakanda. The ensemble cast included Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Florence Kasumba.
The 2019 Golden Globes, hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, will be handed out on Jan. 6.
