Taking its next step aimed at expanding its Hollywood customer base, production and post technology developer Blackmagic Design has unwrapped a new digital camera and two new control panels for its Da Vinci Resolve postproduction software.
Resolve is a color grading system widely used by Hollywood colorists at companies such as EFILM, where recent work included color grading on cinematography Oscar winner La La Land. But as Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty pointed out in Thursday’s announcement, “when we acquired Da Vinci [roughly five years ago], it was only a color corrector. … It now does editing. The editing workflow has really changed how color is being done.” He added that Resolve is also being used more frequently on set.
With this in mind, to “increase portability and creativity,” Petty unveiled the Da Vinci Resolve Micro Panel, a $995 portable controller designed for those who are using Resolve simultaneously for editing and color grading. This includes the same track balls as the advanced Resolve controller used in feature and TV color grading theaters.
The second new panel, the midrange Da Vinci Resolve Mini Panel that lists for $2,995, is aimed at post facilities or for mounting on racks for on-set production.
Also on Thursday, Petty introduced the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K camera, which he described as a digital film camera with features and controls that also enable use as a broadcast or studio camera. Announced features for this model, which lists for $5,995 (accessories sold separately), include a 4.6K sensor; 15 stops of dynamic range; high frame rates up to 60 frames per second (in 4.6K Raw); and EF, PL or B4 mount lens support.
Petty also announced an Ursa upgrade path for current customers.
