Blumhouse Productions is getting some extra funds thanks to Meridian Entertainment.
The Jason Blum-headed production company has inked a multiyear film financing agreement with the Chinese company, which will cover all production outside of Blumhouse’s existing overall deal with Universal.
Blumhouse has had a massive first quarter, with two major box-office successes in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and Jordan Peele’s Get Out, the latter of which pulled in $170 million at the domestic box office. The banner’s busy upcoming slate includes the fourth installment in the Purge franchise and the Ethan Hawke starrer Stockholm.
The first project that will be funded under the Blumhouse pact is the already announced remake of Benji, the mutt that has an inherent expertise in helping distressed humans.
Meridian backed the Netflix doc Casting JonBenet, which premiered at Sundance, as well as the A24-acquired action film Prayer Before Dawn, both of which came about through a pact with former Focus Features head James Schamus and his company, Symbolic Exchange.
