Lionsgate is heading to the bar, picking up Bottle Girls, a female empowerment drama from Laura Sandler.
Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, Krishnan Menon, Brooklyn Weaver and Adam Stone will produce.
Story details are being kept corked, but the film is described as being in the vein of Risky Business and Coyote Ugly — though set in the exclusive world of high-end nightlife and focused on the VIP bottle girls and hosts who’ve become an integral part of the club experience as well as social media influencers.
The project was brought in by Lionsgate’s Jessica Switch, who will oversee for the studio, with Gabriel Chu overseeing for Vertigo.
The concept initially poured out from the producers with Sandler — who has knowledge of the world from the experience of one of her best friends — running with it.
Sandler is an up-and-coming writer who penned the adaptation of the Matthew Quick novel Sorta Like a Rockstar for Fox Searchlight and YA mavens Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill. She previously wrote Holidates, which is set up at Lotus with Mosaic producing, and co-wrote Face It, a CBS Films comedy that has McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision producing.
Sandler is repped by Gersh, Mosaic and Felker, Toczek.
