Box Office Milestone: ‘Jurassic World’ Roars Past $1B Worldwide

There’s no stopping the dinosaurs.

Director Colin Trevorrow‘s Jurassic World, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, is crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office on Monday, becoming the fastest movie in history to achieve that feat (it’s been in release for fewer than two weeks).

In North America, the Universal movie cleared $400 million on Sunday, likewise at a record pace. It took previous record holder The Avengers 14 days to hit $400 million domestically; it took 10 days for Jurassic World.

Final numbers released Monday show Jurassic World doing more business than expected on Father’s Day (Sunday) for a weekend total of $106.6 million — the top sophomore gross of all time, besting the $103.1 million earned domestically by Avengers in its second weekend. (Sunday morning, Universal put Jurassic World‘s weekend estimate at $102 million, but it ended up grossing north of $104 million.)

Overseas, Jurassic World also continues to crush everything in its path, taking in $584.4 million through Sunday, including $161.7 million in China.

Jurassic World is the 22nd member of the billion-dollar club, and the third film of 2015 so far to cross $1 billion after fellow Universal title Furious 7 ($1.51 billion) and Marvel/Disney’s sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.37 billion).
