Dracula Untold, Universal and Legendary Pictures’ vampire origin tale, sunk its teeth into the weekend with $1.3 million at late shows in 2,133 theaters Thursday night.
It’s a decent start for the film, starring Luke Evans, which will expand to 2,885 locations for the weekend. But the $70 million pic is opening on a crowded weekend where two other films — family entry Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and Robert Downey Jr. starrer The Judge — are all tracking to open in the same range (mid- to high teens).
All three new films are facing off against holdover Gone Girl. The David Fincher film, which opened to an strong $37.5 million last weekend, could easily stay at No. 1 due to good word of mouth and solid midweek business. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike star in the adaptation of Gillian Flynn‘s popular novel.
Very Bad Day stars Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner and Ed Oxenbould, and is the weekend’s only new family offering. Playing in 3,088 locations, the $28 million film could click with families to overperform. It’s based on Judith Viorst‘s 1972 children’s book about a family suffering a horrible day and was produced by Disney with 21 Laps and The Jim Henson Company.
The Judge not only stars Downey, but is the first title from Team Downey, the production company he runs with his wife, Susan. Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures made the $50 million film, which opens in 3,003 locations. It stars Robert Duvall opposite the Iron Man actor.
