Blake Lively‘s romantic fantasy The Age of Adaline won the Friday box office race with $5 million from 2,991 theaters for a projected North American debut in the $12 million-plus range.
Still, that won’t be enough to come in ahead of holdover Furious 7, which will win the sleepy weekend with an estimated $16.3 million from 3,760 theaters as it jumps the $300 million mark domestically. On Friday, the Universal blockbuster came in No. 2 with $4.8 million.
Sony’s Mall Cop 2 grossed $3.8 million Friday from 3,760 locations for an estimated weekend in the $13 million to $14 million range and putting its 10-day domestic total at $42 million. Most believe the Kevin James sequel will come in No. 2, putting Adaline at No. 3.
No one expected huge results from any film this weekend, with most companies taking a break from releasing new titles before the summer onslaught begins May 1 with Avengers: Age of Ultron (Age of Ultron has already begun opening overseas).
Lee Toland Krieger directed Age of Adaline for Lakeshore, with Lionsgate handling distribution and marketing duties. Lively stars as a young woman who remains 29-years-old for nearly eight decades. Michiel Huisman, Kathy Baker, Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn co-star.
Elsewhere, faith-based pic Little Boy is bombing in its debut, grossing an estimated $1.4 million Friday from 1,045 runs for projected weekend in the $2.5 million range, only enough for a thirteenth-place finish.
Russell Crowe‘s feature directorial debut, The Water Diviner, is also misfiring in its limited North American launch. The movie grossed $374,000 Friday from 320 locations for a weekend debut just north of $1 million. Warner Bros. is handling Water Diviner domestically.
