Mexico’s most bankable star, Eugenio Derbez, is enjoying yet another huge box-office success with his latest comedy, How to Be a Latin Lover.
Just one week after an impressive debut in the U.S. — where the Pantelion-distributed film has earned a rousing $20.6 million in its first 10 days — How to Be a Latin Lover topped the chart in Mexico over the weekend with an estimated $7 million. That was enough to be beat Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which earned $2.5 million.
Derbez’s previous film, Instructions Not Included — which the multihyphenate wrote, directed, produced and starred in — set an opening-weekend record in Mexico of $11.6 million in 2013.
Actor-director Ken Marino (Wanderlust) helmed How to Be a Latin Lover. The story revolves around a lothario (Derbez) who is finally dumped after 25 years of marriage and must move in with his estranged sister (Salma Hayek). Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, Raquel Welch and Michael Cera also star.
Derbez is hands down the Spanish-speaking world’s hottest talent nowadays. Instructions Not Included stands as the highest-earning Spanish-language film of all time, and How to Be a Latin Lover is tracking to become one of Mexico’s most successful releases ever.
