Scarlett Johansson‘s sci-fi action film Lucy earned $2.74 million Thursday night after opening at 8 p.m. (A glitch at AMC theaters had previously held up box-office reports Friday morning, but Universal has loosely estimated that the film earned around $2.5 million.)
This weekend’s other action offering, Dwayne Johnson starrer Hercules, earned $2.1 million from its evening showings after opening at 7 p.m.
Universal’s female-led actioner should take the No. 1 spot this weekend, beating rival newcomer Hercules. Prerelease tracking suggests Lucy will race past $30 million in its debut — many think it will cross $35 million — while Hercules is expected to earn in the mid-$20 million range, a disappointing start.
Lucy, directed by Luc Besson, stars Johansson as a woman who, after acting as a drug mule, ingests a drug that gives her extraordinary abilities.
Besson’s EuropaCorp made the R-rated Lucy for a reported $40 million. Morgan Freeman also stars.
Brett Ratner helmed Hercules in his first directorial outing since 2011’s Tower Heist. Adapted from Radical Comics’ Hercules, the $100 million film stars Johnson as the man with the strength of a god but the ability to feel pain as a human. His new adventures begin when he’s enlisted by the daughter of the lord of Thrace to save her kingdom from civil war.
Johnson stars opposite Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan and John Hurt in the PG-13 action epic.
