Baz Lurhmann‘s lavish 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s iconic novel The Great Gatsby jumped the $100 million mark at the domestic box office on Thursday after 14 days in release.
Internationally, the Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures production has earned $64.4 million to date, putting Gatsby‘s worldwide total at $165.1 million. Major territories yet to open include Australia — Luhrmann’s home country — Mexico, Brazil and Japan.
Gatsby has proved to be powerful counterprogramming to male-skewing summer tentpoles Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness. The movie headlines Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton, and is easily Luhrmann’s most successful title to date in the U.S. (Moulin Rouge! was his previous best, not accounting for inflation, grossing just north of $57 million in 2001).
“Just as the book has been beloved by readers for generations, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby has already become a favorite of moviegoers. We all congratulate Baz and his amazing cast and crew on the success of the film, which will continue to enjoy the lucrative summer play time,” Warners president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said in announcing the milestone with president of international distribution Veronika Kwan Vandenberg.
Added Warners president of worldwide marketing Sue Kroll: “We had the benefit of a wonderful collaboration with this extraordinary director and his cast and team. The film Baz put together, with its modern yet timeless feel, including its surprising musical mix, gave us all the elements we needed to create a pervasive and evocative marketing campaign that has resonated with audiences everywhere.”
