While Paramount’s Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation had to cede the top spot in North America to Universal’s Straight Outta Compton, in the international marketplace it hung on to the top slot for the third week in a row. The Tom Cruise-starrer picked up $46.1 million from 62 territories to bring its international tally to $235.3 million and its worldwide gross to $373.4 million.
The Paramount/Skydance production topped the charts in France, where it opened to $7 million, and Brazil, where it notched $3.4 million. Among holdover markets, Japan led the roster with an additional $5.2 million. The film arrives in Italy this week and will debut in China on Sept. 8.
While Fox’s Fantastic Four was fading in the U.S., it held on internationally, taking in $16.2 million from 54 markets, although its overseas haul still stands at just $60.1 million and its worldwide tally at $102.1 million. Meanwhile, Fox International’s local-language releases paid off with two films. Brothers, a Hindi-language remake of Gavin O’Connor’s 2011 fight drama Warrior, produced by Lionsgate, Endermol India and Dharma Productions, was the top film in India with $11.2 million, while collecting $12.7 from eight markets. (In the U.S., it opened to $340,000 in 164 locations.) And Pablo Trapero’s thriller El Clan debuted in the director’s home country of Argentina to $2.9 million.
Universal and Illumination’s Minions continued to roll along, attracting $15 million from 62 territories, bringing its worldwide total to $957 million. With a reported $644.5 million in foreign box office, it’s become the fifth biggest animated grosser internationally and is on track to next overtake Toy Story 3’s $650 million in international coin. Jurassic World also continued to perform for the studio with $8.9 million from 63 territories, including $7.4 million from Japan, where it remained in the top spot. Its international gross now stands at $968.3 million and its worldwide total at $1.6 billion. Compton opened in just one territory abroad, making its international entrance in Trinidad and the Caribbean to $15,000.
Warners’ The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Sony’s Pixels both took in an estimated $12 million each. The spy caper debuted in 23 territories, scoring its best showing in Russia, where it was the top film with $3.1 million. In the U.K., it lured in $2.3 million, while collecting another $1.2 million in Australia.
Pixels, starring Adam Sandler, opened in eight new territories. In the U.K., it took the top slot with $4.2 million, including the take from preview screenings. Its foreign total now stands at $91.1 million.
Pixar’s Inside Out, from Disney, now in its ninth weekend, added $11.4 million from 55 territories as its international purse grew to $327.6 million and its worldwide total to $667 million. And Marvel’s Ant-Man, in its fifth weekend, took in $5.6 million to bring its total international box office to $189.5 million and its worldwide figure to $347.1 million.
Rentrak also reported that Wanda’s Media’s Chinese comedy Go Away, Mr. Tumor, opening in China and Australia, was greeted with an impressive $21.5 million. South Korea’s Veteran took in $18.2 million. And the huge Chinese hit Monster Hunt took in an additional $11.6 million to bring its total to date to of $349.5 million.
