DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda and Warner Bros.’ Hangover sequels opened strongly the foreign theatrical circuit but the weekend’s No. 1 box office crown went once again to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
And while 3D playoff may losing a bit of its luster in the U.S. and Canada, the exhibition format remained gangbusters overseas for both Pirates and Kung Fu Panda 2 with both titles generating 60 percent or more of their grosses from 3D venues.
Through Sunday, the fourth installment in producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s fantasy-action franchise starring Johnny Depp captured $122.8 million in its second round, a 52 percent drop from the film’s record-setting opening surge ($260.4 million) in the prior round.
On Monday, the Pirates sequel added another $18.2 million in overseas box office bringing its foreign gross total to $489 million. Of that cume, $297.2 million or 61 percent of the total was drawn from 3D venues, said Disney.
So far, Tides is grossing on the foreign circuit nearly three times as much as the sequel is generating in the U.S. and Canada. (Domestic gross through Monday stands at $164 million).
The Hangover Part II, the sequel to 2009’s comedy original (which grossed $191.6 million on the foreign circuit), opened at 5,190 screens in 40 territories for $60.3 million through Monday, which Warners said is 185% more than the comparable opening gross of the original Hangover in the same markets.
For its part, Kung Fu Panda 2 in 3D opened in just 11 markets, 29 percent of the international marketplace and just a tad more than a tenth of the some 100 territories played on the weekend by Pirates. It grossed $55.5 million at 9,037 locations. Action from 3D venues “was 60 percent across our 11 markets,” said distributor Paramount.
Top markets for On Stranger Tides were Russia (where the market cume through Sunday stood at $49.8 million), Japan ($44.2 million), China ($43.6 million), Germany ($35.2 million) and the U.K. ($32 million).
Tides reached the $600 million worldwide box office mark in just 12 days, making the sequel 2011’s biggest-grossing title globally. The film’s foreign gross total has already surpassed by more than $135 million that of the franchise original, 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which racked up $352.9 million.
Hangover 2 drew huge numbers from its No. 1 UK bow ($16.7 million from 920 screens, the biggest market opening for a U.S. comedy) and from Australia ($11.9 million from 424 screens). Germany and Russia will open this week.
The sequel to 2008’s Kung Fu Panda — which grossed a total of $416 million overseas — finished in the top spot in nine of its debut territories with China, Russia and South Korea leading the list.
In China the Panda 2 opening threw off a humongous $16 million in just the first two days from some 5,540 situations. Based on “early estimates,” said Paramount, the premier was “the all-time highest debut by a foreign film” in the market.
In Russia came up with $15 million from 700 sites while Korea (via C.J. Entertainment) chipped in $13 million from 1,080 venues, the biggest market opening for an animation title. All-time opening box office records for an animation title were set in Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia and India.
This week will see Kung Fu Panda 2 opening in another 17 markets as it rolls out gradually over the summer month to capitalize on school holidays, topped by a Japan bow on Aug. 19.
Tree of Life is holding well in France via Europa Film, finishing No. 4 in the market by nabbing $1.46 million in its third round 351 screens, an increase of 10 percent from the prior weekend. Market cume stands at $3.9 million.
The weekend overall provided director Terrence Malick’s Cannes Festival Palme d’Or winner $2.7 million from 624 screens in eight markets for an early overseas cume of $6.9 million. Who says Festival awards don’t count at the box office?
Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, which opened out-of-competition in Cannes, took a 36 percent box office hit in its third weekend in France via Mars Distribution, but still ranked No. 3 in the market. Weekend registered $1.59 million from 484 sites for a market cume of $9.87 million. Overall, Paris captured $2.6 million from 763 sites in three territories, pushing its overseas gross total to $15.2 million.
Opening No. 2 in Japan was Toho’s Princess Toyotomi, a mystery outing based on a prize-winning novel by Manabu Makine. Debut round at 277 sites generated $3.8 million. No. 3 in its fourth South Korea round was C.J. Entertainment’s comedy Sunny, which drew $3.4 million from 436 screens for a market cume of $23.6 million.
No. 4 on the weekend was Fast Five, which grossed $15.8 million through Monday at 6,811 situations in 60 territories, pushing its foreign box office cume past the $350-million offshore mark (cume, $350.1 million).
That makes the fifth sequel in the turbo-charged car action franchise co-starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Paul Walker the fourth highest grossing film on the foreign circuit ever released by Universal, following 1993’s Jurassic Park (foreign gross of $565 million), 2008’s Mamma Mia ($462 million), 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park ($386 million) and 2005’s King Kong ($332 million)
Fifth was Marvel Entertainment’s Thor from Paramount, which collected $3.93 million from 3,953 locations in 53 territories. Foreign gross total for director Kenneth Branagh’s treatment of the mythic comic book character come to $254 million.
Fox’s family animation title Rio drew $3.9 million from 3,500 venues in 37 markets for an overseas gross total of $322.7 million. Same distrib’s Water For Elephants, a Depression-era drama co-starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson, grossed $3.1 million from 2,400 situations in 41 territories, lifting its overseas cume to $50.7 million.
Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 opened No. 3 in the U.K. ($2.4 million drawn from 443 sites), and drew $2.5 million on the weekend overall from 500 locations in five markets, pushing its overseas cume to $9.3 million. Same distrib’s Black Swan continues strongly in Japan, drawing $2.07 million in its third market round at 325 spots. Japan cume stands at $16.9 million while the overall foreign gross total stands at $209.3 million.
Universal’s The Adjustment Bureau opened No. 3 in Japan with an estimated $1.7 million from 218 sites. Overall weekend for the action drama starring Matt Damon came to $2.1 million from 391 locations in nine territories, pushing the overseas cume to $56.6 million.
Other international cumes: Sony’s Priest, $40.7 million (after a $1.6 million weekend at 1,845 screens in 50 markets); Focus Features/Universal’s Hanna, $11.1 million; Universal’s Hop, $65.5 million; Focus Features’ The Eagle, $19.5 million; Gaumont’s La conquete (The Conquest), $3.3 million in two rounds in France only; Universal’s Senna, $2.9 million; Focus Features’ Biutiful, $19.2 million; Universal’s Paul, $52.5 million; Focus Features’ Another Year, $15.2 million; and Fox’s Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, $45.8 million.
