That looks to be the case, according to prerelease tracking. The pre-Halloween movie, which rolls out in 3,130 theaters this weekend, looks to open in the $15 million to $20 million range. It could even beat holdover Blade Runner 2049 and take the No. 1 spot.
Directed by Christopher Landon, Happy Death Day stars Jessica Rothe as a college student who relives the day of her murder over and over until she discovers her killer’s identity. The pic is rated PG-13.
Among other new offerings, STX Entertainment’s The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, is expected to open in the low- to mid-teen millions. The U.K.-China co-production was directed by Martin Campbell and revolves around a former Navy SEAL who comes out of retirement after his daughter is killed in what appears to be a politically motivated terrorist attack.
From director Reginald Hudlin and Open Road Films, Marshall stars Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American member of the Supreme Court. The film revolves around one of the first cases of his career and also stars Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown and James Cromwell.
Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, written and directed by Angela Robinson, tells the story of real-life American psychologist William Moulton Marston, who created the fictional character Wonder Woman. Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote star. Annapurna Pictures acquired U.S. rights from Studio 6 Films.
