Box Office Report: ‘The Vow’ Earns a Record $11.6 Mil on Valentine’s Day

Breaking records, The Vow grossed a massive $11.6 million on Valentine’s Day as it saw business soar 251 percent over Monday.

The previous best midweek Valentine’s Day gross at the dometic box office was $7.5 million for Hitch in 2005.

The Vow opened to a sizeable $41.2 million over the weekend, exceeding expectations and marking the top debut ever for Clint Culpepper’s Screen Gems, besting the $30.5 million opening of Dear John, also starring Tatum.

Through Tuesday, The Vow’s five-day domestic cume was a pleasing $56.2 million.

Universal also saw great numbers for Denzel Washington–Ryan Reynolds action pic Safe House, which grossed $6.1 million on Tuesday, up 109 percent from Monday. The movie opened opposite The Vow over the weekend, and has grossed $49.2 million in its first five days domestically.

There were plenty of choices on Valentine’s Day–including previews of 20th Century Fox’s Reese Witherspoon–Chris Pine–Tom Hardy action comedy This Means War. And in select cities across the country,  Paramount and Fox held free screenings of Titanic in 3D (screenings were also held overseas). The Titanic re-release doesn’t officially open in theaters until April 4.

Previews of This Means War in 2,500 theaters generated a strong $1.7 million in previews, with hundreds of theaters reporting sel out shows. Top locations included theaters in Los Angeles, Oklahoma Theaters, Salt Lake City, Boston, New York, Seattle and El Paso.

This Means War officially debuts nationwide on Friday.
