Brainstorm Media and FilmRise have picked up North American TV, digital and home video rights to The Discoverers.
The dysfunctional family road comedy will cap off its theatrical release with a simultaneous DVD and VOD rollout Nov. 4.
The film, starring Griffin Dunne, follows a family embarking on a Lewis and Clark re-enactment trek, discovering themselves and each other along the way.
Justin Schwarz wrote and directed The Discoverers, which also stars Stuart Margolin, Cara Buono, Madeleine Martin, David Rasche, Dreama Walker and Devon Graye. It went through the festival circuit in 2012 and 2013, and the filmmakers raised money through Kickstarter to release the film theatrically under their Quadratic Media banner. It began hitting theaters in more than 25 markets in May.
THR‘s review from the 2012 Hampton Film Festival praised the film’s “intelligent script and sympathetic lead performance by Griffin Dunne.”
“The Discoverers is one of those rare heartwarming and hilarious indie gems where you find yourself laughing and crying, often in the same moment,” says FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher, who will oversee the Home Video release. “Griffin Dunne’s performance as a dad juggling his kids and his father is both funny and relatable in an all-too-painful way, and he’s supported by an all-star ensemble of indie favorites. While the premise of the Lewis and Clark trek is unique, the story of a family trying to figure it out is universal.”
