Nora Twomey, helmer of the upcoming animated feature The Breadwinner; Oscar-winning director John Kahrs (Paperman) and Walt Disney Animation Studios will receive the inaugural Women in Animation Diversity Awards at Spark Animation 2017, the festival that opens Thursday in Vancouver.
Twomey’s The Breadwinner, which is set to be released by GKIDS on Nov. 17, is based on the book of the same name by Deborah Ellis and follows a young girl living under the Taliban regime. Kahrs is being recognized for the community created in his latest short, June: Life Is Better When You Share the Ride for Lyft. And Disney is being honored for its body of work, with animated features including Zootopia, which tackled the themes of bias and stereotype.
As previously announced, Disney Legend Glen Keane will receive a lifetime achievement award on the opening night of Spark. Keane’s work as a character animator has produced some of Disney’s most iconic characters, including Beast from Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin from Aladdin. His latest animated short, Dear Basketball, will be screened at Spark.
In the Spark competition for shortform work, the best in show award recipient is Garden Party, a French short from Florian Babikian, Vincent Bayoux, Victor Caire, Theophile Dufresne, Gabriel Grapperon and Lucas Navarro.
