A Hollywood duel between Andrew Lloyd Webber and MGM chairman and CEO Gary Barber at the Breeders’ Cup on Friday ended with victory for neither.
The Fugue, owned by Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber out of their Watership Down Stud in Hampshire, England, entered the $2 million Filly and Mare Turf horse race at Santa Anita Park as the prohibitive 8-to-5 favorite but got stuck along the rail and finished third, 1 ¼ lengths back.
Meanwhile, In Lingerie, co-owned by Barber and Eclipse Thoroughbred, finished ninth in the 11-horse field after going off at odds of 3-to-1 and contending in the first half of the 1 ¼-mile race. It was the 3-year-old filly’s first run on turf this year.
Zagora, a France-based horse that went off at odds of 9-to-1, won the race and paid $20.40, $7.80 and $5.
After six races Friday, the Breeders’ Cup continues Saturday with nine more.
