Brit List 2011 Topped By Sci-Fi Horror ‘The Call Up’

LONDON — A sci-fi horror script penned by Charles Barker entitled The Call Up and set in the world of virtual gaming is the most-liked unproduced screenplay here in the U.K., topping this year’s Brit List.

The Brit List, a British answer to Hollywood’s Black List, is compiled from recommendations made by development executives, agents and producers here of the top scripts knocking around that have yet to be produced.

Barker’s script tops this year’s list with 10 votes and being developed by Stigma Films here.

Novelist William Boyd’s screen adaptation of his own novel Ordinary Thunderstorms appears in second place on the list with eight votes.

It is with former BBC Films chief David Thompson’s Origin Pictures and is being developed with the pubcaster’s film unit.

It details the story of an innocent man on the run across London trying to avoid both the police and a hitman sent to kill him.

Third spot is jointly taken, with seven votes apiece, by Hong Khaou‘s drama Lilting the Past from producer Dominic Buchanan and the United Agents’ repped duo Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth whose comedy Olivia and Jim from Forward Films appears.

Thompson’s Origin Pictures and Film4 also has Tusk Tusk by Polly Stenham on this year’s list with six votes.

Based on Stenham’s stage play, the script details the story of three children left to fend for themselves in a London flat as things start to spiral out of control.

Also on six votes is James Graham‘s X+Y, which details the story of a teenage math prodigy’s quest to find the formula for love, again stationed with Origin Pictures, BBC Films and the British Film Institute.

The third and final script sharing six votes is Man Up, from Tess Morris which is backed by Big Talk Productions and Studio Canal and is billed simply as a romantic comedy.

A Focus Features project Baghdad Wedding, adapted by Hassan Abdulrassak from his own play, in tandem with Nick Drake makes this year’s list also.

Out of over 160 screenplays nominated 26 projects achieved the three votes or more needed in order to appear on the list, according to a copy obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
