Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst clearly did not text each other about their Cannes photo op attire for On The Road, Walter Salles‘ adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s cult classic Beat Generation novel. Or maybe they did, but just wanted to look completely different.
Dunst chose a demure mid-calf white retro frock from Dolce & Gabbana and accessorized with a sweet floral headband. She also wore a Van Cleef & Arpels vintage Alhambra diamond watch.
Meanwhile, Stewart revealed her rocker edge, stepping out in a pair of Balenciaga’s bright wildly patterned skinny pants, high heels with a white Juicy Couture fitted tank (just $48) and a black jacket. She’s got a fragrance contract with the fashion house and will unquestionably wear a fabulous Balenciaga gown at the Cannes premiere this evening. But we’re loving the high-low price points that makes this outfit feel very now.
Stewart, who plays Neal Cassady’s wife Mary Lou, has sex scenes with both Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley’s characters as the group makes a crazy road trip across the U.S. in the 1950s, high on marijuana and speed-spiked coffee.
Stewart was first approached by Salles when she was 16, the same age as Mary Lou when she married Cassady, but the film has taken several years to come to fruition.
While the Cannes reviews have not been stellar, Stewart told reporters at the festival: “The character is so vivid, she jumps right off the page and slaps you in the face. If I had to choose one character who really, truly embodied the spirit of this book, it was her. She really is this amazing link between the two boys. It’s a grand statement to make but it might not have happened without her.”
