Cannes: Four-Legged Favorites for Palm Dog Award Emerge

There may still be a couple of major Cannes screenings left to go, but the four-legged frontrunners are already starting to line up for the festival’s annual celebration of cinematic pooches, the Palm Dog.

Last year saw the 250 stars of dog apocalypse thriller White God join The Artist’s Uggie and Up’s animated Dug on the roster of winners, but during the award’s 15th anniversary year, a clear runaway favorite hasn’t yet wagged its tail.

Among the possible canine contenders for the coveted Palm Dog collar, to be revealed Friday, is the unnamed mutt from dark comedy The Lobster (actually a reincarnation of one of the main characters), according to awards founder Toby Rose.

THR’s team of critics also singled out a Maltese poodle named Dixie in the second chapter of Miguel Gomes’ Arabian Nights three-parter, the German-speaking rottweiler in punk-rock thriller Green Room and a dog seen in one of the outtakes during the end credits of Pixar’s Inside Out. A late mention went to a “super-adorable” labrador in Chinese competition entry Mountains May Depart.

“Word has reached the Palm Dog team that there is a dog chowing down on battlefield corpses in Macbeth,” adds Rose. “Bad Boy!”
