Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy admittedly butted heads during a taxing six-month Mad Max: Fury Road shoot in Namibia’s desert (his wrap gift to her was a self-portrait with the inscription: “You’re an absolute nightmare, BUT you are also f—ing awesome”). And the two actors didn’t exactly look chummy at the Palais premiere on Thursday.
They posed together for an obligatory group shot and exchanged small talk, but they really had tongues wagging inside the theater when they broke Cannes protocol by not going in together — Theron entered first and Hardy rushed in later, just before the film unspooled.
At the private Warner Bros.-hosted afterparty, Theron kept close to beau Sean Penn, snuggling on a sofa near the rooftop pool of the JW Marriott. Other attendees included the film’s Zoe Kravitz and Nicholas Hoult, jury members Jake Gyllenhaal and Sienna Miller, Unbroken star Jack O’Connell and Warner Bros.’ Sue Kroll. …
Brett Ratner was at the Mad Max afterparty, but the filmmaker wasn’t in a snuggling mood when he left the premiere. He was accompanied by a female guest who seemed to have picked up some of the intensity onscreen, angrily shouting at Ratner. No word on what the beef was about. …
At the L’Oreal party at the Martinez after Mad Max, French pop chanteuse Petite Meller, who performed in barely-there underwear, a feathered cape and her signature kabuki-style makeup, had the crowd buzzing. Also inside, Liya Kebede got her groove on. The Proenza Schouler-clad model was happy to hit the dance floor after the “intense” movie. “The action scenes were amazing. I was tense the whole time,” she told THR. In addition to Meller, makeup artist Karim Rahman entertained the crowd, transforming into a DJ for the night, and kept the Martinez’s rooftop rocking into the wee hours of the morning. …
Meanwhile, at the Tale of Tales afterparty at Villa Schweppes, an Alexander McQueen-clad Salma Hayek dropped by with husband Francois-Henri Pinault. They took one look at the crowd and instantly turned for the exit. Toby Jones, John C. Reilly and the rest of the cast fought their way to the VIP section — except for Guillaume Delaunay, who opted to spend the night just outside the Villa entrance.
