The Dress: A boxy, embellished long-sleeve black mini dress from Anthony Vaccarello’s fall 2017 collection for Saint Laurent.
The Wearer: House of Cards star Robin Wright, styled by Kemal Harris.
The Event: Wednesday’s premiere of Ismael’s Ghosts, which stars Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Why It Matters: The sparkly dress comes from Vaccarello’s second collection for the French fashion house, which he joined just last year following the departure of acclaimed creative director Hedi Slimane. Both of Vaccarello’s collections were met with OK reviews, with many critics suggesting that the young, former Versus Versace designer has yet to find his footing at the brand.
But what the looks lack on the runway, they make up for on the red carpet. Wright, who ditched the slouchy knee-high black boots seen on the catwalk in favor of simple black pumps, looks divine in the modern, short LBD, easily standing out on the Cannes Croisette, which was bursting with silky slip-style dresses (worn mostly by models like Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski) and ball gowns like those seen on Sara Sampaio and Elle Fanning.
The actress styled her choppy blond ‘do, which is always perfectly coiffed for her role as Claire Underwood on Netflix’s House of Cards, in a fun, flippy look that mimics the ‘80s rock ‘n’ roll tone of the shoulder-padded ensemble.
In an interesting twist, Gainsbourg also opted for a sparkly mini dress from the collection, meaning that while the Insta-girls reach for ball gowns, it’s the over-40 actresses that are pulling off the coolest Cannes looks.
