Oscilloscope Laboratories has picked up U.S. rights to Elvira Lind’s documentary Bobbi Jene, a portrait of dancer Bobbi Jene Smith, which was named best documentary feature at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
The American-born Jene Smith spent a decade with Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company, and the film, which will be released theatrically later this year, follows her as she returns to the United States.
At Tribeca, it also won awards for best cinematography in a documentary feature and best editing in a doc. “Elvira has crafted a film that is so much more than the logline would lead you to believe. The closeness and intimacy she achieves easily transcends Bobbi Jene’s personal story beyond that of just a dancer. It’s a human story with universal relatability that I have no doubt will move anyone who sees it,” Oscilloscope’s Dan Berger said in announcing the acquisition.
United Talent Agency, which reps Lind, brokered the deal. Autlook Filmsales is handling world sales in Cannes.
