In a move to expand the range of movies it plans to make, Bold Films has tapped Matthew Rhodes as president of motion pictures. Bold, the company headed by chairman Michel Litvak and CEO Gary Michael Walters, also appointed Jeffrey Stott as executive vp production to oversee the company’s physical production activities.
Rhodes is coming from Mandalay Vision, where he acted as president since 2011. While there, he acted as a producer on The Voices, a twisted look at a serial killer directed by Marjane Satrapi and starring Ryan Reynolds, Anna Kendrick and Gemma Arterton. The movie premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and sold to Lionsgate.

Rhodes is also a producer on Dark Places, an adaptation of a Gillian Flynn book starring Charlize Theron, Chloe Moretz and Nicholas Hoult, which is currently in postproduction. His other producing credits include Fire With Fire, starring Bruce Willis, and Bad Country, starring Matt Dillon.
Before joining Mandalay, Rhodes was an independent producer via his company Persistent Entertainment — among his credits are the Robert Redford-starring An Unfinished Life and Richard Kelly’s Southland. Also on his resume is acting as an assistant to Scott Rudin.
Bold was involved in the making of Whiplash, the Sundance sensation staring Miles Teller, and Lost River, the directorial debut of Ryan Gosling. Both are selling at Cannes. It is also in postproduction on The Coup, starring Owen Wilson and Lake Bell, and Nightcrawler, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
The company is counting on Rhodes to help Bold transition to making movies with larger budgets and A-list actors.

Said Litvak: “It was always my goal to build a haven for gifted filmmakers and empower them to create unique and daring films. Matt’s proven ability to work closely and constructively with A-list actors, directors, writers and producers will enable us to build an even more supportive and exciting environment for independent Hollywood.”
Stott, meanwhile, is a production veteran with credits ranging from The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally to Drive and 2 Guns. He also worked on HBO miniseries John Adams and TV series Seinfeld.
In other company moves, Alex Coffee has been promoted to vp legal affairs, and Zoe Engling has been promoted to creative coordinator.
Bold has also recently moved into television, and it financed and produced the medical drama Black Box currently airing on ABC.
